350 Neighbors and Friends Party and Work at Laney Garden
An estimated 350 people from throughout the East Bay met at the Laney College this Sunday for a work party to revitalize and improve the Community Garden. It was one of 7,400 other carbon-cutting events around the world showing our communities and our leaders that Sustainability movement continues to rally and fight for Climate Justice.
Beginning around noon, teams worked simultaneously on restoring garden beds, pulling weeds, seeding winter vegetables, constructing retaining walls, installing drip-irrigation, and creating a rainwater catchment intervention on a nearby portable. Many participants also attend workshops on rainwater catchment systems, No on Prop 23.
On site, a taco truck served a variety of tacos and salsas, complete with radishes, carrots and horchata. Food and drink was free to event attendees.
At 3pm, the sponsoring organizations took to the stage to welcome and to thank everyone for their hard work. Elected officials and candidates talked about their support for action on climate change. The event concluded with spoken word and rap performance by the Clean Energy Tour, a collection of environmentally-conscious and socially-just hip-hop artists from the East Bay.
“Get Down and Dirty Oakland” was organized by the Oakland Climate Action Coalition, Bay Localize, Ella Baker Center, CommuniTree, Greenpeace, HOPE Collaborative, and Laney College.
