Beginning this month (December), Gilbane Building Company begins construction on Laney’s Athletic Field Complex, a new two-story 18,000 sq. ft. athletic facility for Laney men’s and women’s sports. The building is part of a larger project that also includes the complete replacement of the baseball diamond and the multi-use field. When finished, Laney will host events on a new turf fields and have an additional 100 parking spaces on the East side of the campus.
“This building has everyone in the Department [of General Services] excited,” said Dr. Sadiq B. Ikharo, Vice Chancellor of General Services. “Using a Design-Build method, our staff and our designers consulted with many faculty and staff at Laney, and the result is a building that fits their program requirements and our desire to build green.”

The $12.7M project could attain the prestigious LEED NC Gold rating, says Jack Lin, Organizer for the Sustainable Peralta Initative. “Everyone involved in this building knows LEED,” he says. “The Board set the goal… Dr. Ihkaro reinfoced the mandate in design meetings. The [General Services] staff also supports the goal. The Design-Build firms all have LEED construction experience. It’s a very exciting time to be putting up new buildings at Peralta.”
Some of the green features of the buildings are:
- New, efficient HVAC system
- Low-toxicity and low-odor paints
- Energy efficient lighting
- Low-flow toilets and sinks
- Use of sustainably-sourced wood, concrete, glass and steel
- 200 kW of solar panels on carports
- Use of recycled water for irrigation
- Large bioswells to catch and control stormwater run-off
- Proximity to BART and AC Transit
In this first phase, estimated to be completed by March of 2010, Gilbane and its contractors will complete the parking lot and site preparation. There after, Gilbane will begin construction of the Field house, baseball and multi-use turf fields in Fall of 2010. The whole project may be done by Spring of 2011.

The Field House itself was designed by Robert Baum of Gould Evans Baum Thornley. Verde Design designed the multi-use fields, parking and landscaping. The Board of Trustee’s approved the project in July 2007, and approved selection of a Design-Build conglomerate on November, 2008.
Gilbane Construction also donated $2,500 to the Peralta Colleges Foundation to support a new student scholarship in the construction trades programs. They also announced an internship opportunity for one student in the Laney construction trades to work alongside the on-site crew.
