Berkeley City College Recycling Data, 2004-2007
At Berkeley College, the most notable waste diversion trend this years are
- Huge increase in recycling beverage containers
- Spike in recycling cardboard
- Small increase in Business Source Reduction
- Expected disappearance of organics and food waste collection
- Expected disappearance of construction and demolition debris
- Expected disappearance of MRF
In 2006, Berkeley City College moved into its new home at 2050 Center Street. Since no major construction has occurred, the College reported no debris from construction or demolition. Due to moving needs (boxes, furniture packaging, packaging for electronics and other instructional supplies, and other logistics containers), the College used and recycled an enormous amount of cardboard.
The new building does not include a food service kitchen nor a formal cafeteria, thus no organics and food waste collection was instituted at move in.
Recycling bins were installed throughout the building between August and September 2008. A study will forthcoming on the use and effectiveness of the bins. Berkeley City College head custodian Dwayne Cain has also reported that the college has sufficient staffing to service the recycling bins, and they have done so since the bins were installed.
