Laney College Recycling Data 2004-2007
by Jack Lin - December 3rd, 2008.Available data indicates that the waste diversion percentage was lower in 2008 (68% compared to 86% the previous year) because of the lack of construction and demolition debris (C&D). Although large capital projects occurred — Beginner’s Inn remodeling, Eagle Village portables construction — none involved further demolition of existing construction.
In September of 2008, Department of General Services staff, student-employee Custodial Assistants and support from Laney College custodians, deployed over 500 recycling bins. Approximately 45 pairs of new outdoor recycling and trash bins (made of recycled plastic and steel) were placed at convenient locations through out campus.
In November of 2008, the Sustainability Committee selected two Recycling Education Interns to assist the Department of General Services in publicizing and educating college faculty and students on proper recycling procedures.
Future improvements to protocol include installing a compactor dedicated to recyclables. Currently, the custodians do not yet have a compactor dedicated to recycling.
It was commonly believed by prior to September of 2008 that the College did not have any recycling at all. However, since 2003, faculty and staff in the Laney Tower and Student Services offices (Building A) have been recycling regularly into centrally located on each floor. CivicCorps (formerly East Bay Conservation Corps) crew emptied those bins every week, systematically taking each bin down the elevator and emptying the contents into a truck. Each service pull lasted approximately 4 hours due to long elevator waits.
